Book: Deuce, Fade, Tegan and Stalker leave Salvation at the end of book 2 to get help fighting the besieging horde. Book 3 picks up with them heading to Soldier's Pond for help with freaks on their tail. When they manage to return to Salvation with help, it's too late, so Deuce and the gang return to Soldier's Pond with the remnant of Salvation survivors to contemplate how to fight the horde. Deuce decides the only way to win is for the forces of the various towns to unite and fight as one army against the horde, but she runs into resistance in each town she visits trying to recruit for her army. In the end, Deuce does manage to raise an army and, with unexpected help, meet the horde in a winner take all battle. The book starts out with a mild love triangle among Deuce, Stalker and Fade, but it's resolved pretty early on, and there is only moderate romantic tension.I found the first half of the book to be just okay. Basically the repetitive formula was: march, march, march--fight freaks, then march, march, march--fight the freaks. I found it a little tedious and unimaginative. However, the last part of the book when Deuce meets up with an unexpected ally was pretty good from that point on. It pulled the book up to 4 stars for me and earns it a solid thumbs up.
Trilogy: Overall, a solid, good read, but it had its ups and downs. Book 1 was excellent, but much of that was due to the weird underground society and rituals that Deuce grew up in. Once the story shifts to a more bucolic and domestic world in book 2, with mothers, schools, dresses and dances, I lost a lot of interest. Book 3 moves away from the Deuce in a dress schtick and focuses on Deuce the fighter again. Smart move. Horde is not as good as Enclave, IMO, but thankfully it it shows us Deuce the kick ass fighter again, which kind of got lost a lot in book 2. So, I rank Enclave at 5 stars, Outpost at 3.5, and Horde at 4. I especially liked the epilogue, and kudos for the Tegan character--she was good.

Books one and two in this series really sucked me into the story. I couldn't put them down to see what would happen next. I started book three pretty much right after Outpost ended. I was excited but also anxious to see how Ann would end this series.
I'm a little confused how to rate this actually. While I did love this one as much as the previous two, it felt like something was missing for me.
Deuce was still the same kick ass heroine I've loved from the start but she seemed too grown up than her 17 years. While I understood since she had to grow up quickly in her life, some scenes just didn't seems believable for a teenaged girl to handle.
Fade has always been a wildcard for me. I go from really liking the guy to wanting to strangle him. I just wished he would have stepped up more and been the guy Deuce truly deserved. He got there finally at the end but it took a little too long for me.
My favorite character in the whole series (besides Deuce, Longshot, Momma Oaks & Edmund) was Stalker. Yes he didn't start out as the most likable guy but for me he changed the most and in the best possible way. He was always there for Deuce to support her and have her back with no questions asked. In my opinion she couldn't have done half of what she accomplished without him. I was Team Stalker all the way and I really wish Deuce felt the same.
Horde was a great end to this incredible, original series and I am so happy to have read them. The only thing I would change is to have cut some of the unnecessary scenes out (there was a lot of battles in this one) and focus on the heart of the story; the people, Freaks and how it all started and the final solution. We got some much needed answers but I wanted more. I'm keeping my fingers crossed Ms. Aguirre writes a spinoff series to take this story into the future. 4 Stars!
I first read Enclave about a year ago, and was completely drawn in to this world Ann had built. Outpost, while being a completely different kind of book than Enclave was, was somehow the perfect sequel. And now Horde, while once again being something entirely new, is the perfect ending. It does everything the final book in a series should do. It answers our questions, ties up loose ends, and gives us a satisfying ending.
One of the things that impresses me most about this series is the incredible amount of world building that has gone on over the course of the books. Even though each book tells its story in a different and unique place (the Enclave and their underground world, the decaying urban jungle if the "ruins", salvation and its old-time ways, the settlements and forests of "Horde"), they all come together seamlessly to form a picture of a world that has died and is trying to be reborn. Even the evolution of the Freaks was explained in a way that made sense in the context of the overall story. This doesn't seem like a book that did well, so the author decided to tack some more stuff onto the story and turn it into a series. This seems like an idea that was completely thought and fleshed out before the first page of the first book was ever written.
Another thing is the painstaking character development--not only of our main characters, but so many of the secondary ones as well. There are no cardboard cutouts here, no inconsistent characters (except for when that inconsistency is a true and believable part of the character's gradual growth and development), and very little cannon fodder (those minimally-drawn characters that are so often introduced for the sole purpose of being killed off).
Deuce is probably one of my favorite heroines ever. She started off a little bit one-dimensional, but as the series continued she fleshed out into a multi-faceted, yet somehow still straightforward, character. It was a pleasure to see her transformation from pure huntress to woman. Watching in Outpost as she learned about family, devotion, and love, and then in Horde as she applied those new lessons in regards to Fade and her relationship with him--as well as her new family--was so fulfilling.
The book isn't perfect. It starts slowly, has many awkward moments, lacks subtlety as it beats you over the head with it's messages, and the romantic moments between Deuce and Fade-while sweet and real-often seem somewhat forced and out of place. But for all that, I'm still giving it 5 stars because the things it does well, it does EXTREMELY well. After being disappointed time after time when a final book fell flat (or went compeletely off the rails--I'm looking at you Allegiant), I can overlook the few minor flaws in a book that manages to get so much just right.
