Murder, mud and mayhem abound when J.J. Carrington and her lovable, misbehaving, hundred pound Rottweiler Bacon stumble upon the location of a dumped body in their neighborhood park. J.J.’s dull life is turned upside down when she becomes determined to help the police find the killer. Chaos ensues as J.J. comes face to face with the fact that solving crime in real life isn’t quite as neat and tidy as it is appears on television and in the movies. Good thing Bacon has her back.

I definitely agree with my fellow reviewers on that!

If this is the author's first mystery, it's not a bad effort but there were too many improbabilities for me:

* When J. J. finds cocaine in the flower shop AND discovers the method for distributing it -- she doesn't tell the police???

* J. J. single-handedly got a large, dangerous snake into a plastic tote and it stayed in it for her??

* J. J. has a secretarial position (what? $10 or $11 an hour?) but she can pay the mortgage on a 3 bedroom house, afford to take days off at will, and seemingly has limitless discretionary spending?

When J. J. tells Detective Anderson about her activities, she isn't slapped with two counts of breaking and entering, even if witholding evidence and interfering with a police investigation are a little iffy. J. J. does not follow instructions to stay home; ends up getting knocked out along with the criminals when the police toss in some sort of concussion bomb and Detective Anderson tells her, "Suck it up." You bet!

Anyhow, don't miss this one if you like mysteries that are just a lot of fun.

Shakin' Bacon A JJ Carrington Caper Book 1 edition by Carol Rutkowski Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I bought this book mainly because I had a Rottie. It ended up being a good mystery book, with suspense. There was a little bit of Nancy Drew, She Wrote Murder, and others. I enjoyed the suspense along with determination from J.J. I would recommend this book to all age groups. And it had a good ending.
It was an entertaining story. As a Rottweiler mom, I was very excited to see a series about a Rottweiler. And the main character went to Tim Hortons for coffee. The author must live in my area. We share an addiction to Tim's!
This lady J J watches a lot of police, mystery, who done it type programs. She has it in her head murders are solved like t v programs.
This was a frustrating story as you follow her as she stumbles through trying to solve a murder. Her dog Bacon is more enjoyable than J J
Carol Rutkowski's writing is simple and active, quickly pullling the reader into her characters' latest adventure. Where there's violence, it's more of a humorous plot foil than anything I'd label as "violence." It's hard to decode "sexual content" here. A kiss? Waking up together in the morning? I abstain. No, the black Lab doesn't get hurt. Yes, you'll enjoy this romp.
If you love dogs and feisty heroines, this is the book for you. Holmes and Watson, J.J. and Bacon. Or is it the other way around? Bacon may be Holmes and J.J. Watson. Some of the plot seems a bit improbable, but you can suspend disbelief as you do when you read a Janet Evanovitch mystery. How many black vehicles has Stephanie Plum borrowed from Ranger, only to have it blown up or go up in flames, yet he doesn't hesitate to lend her another and another? In the same way J.J. will get herself into improbable situations, yet I can believe it. J.J. is the protagonist and Bacon is the hero, saving J.J.'s bacon!
I'm looking forward to book #2 in this fun series. Bring it on, Carol Rutkowski!
This novel starts with a murder, then meanders a bit, a ` la "Murder She Wrote," through amateur sleuthing by the narrator, interrupted by many references to her huge dog, so big he's named Bacon. The reader must suspend his/her disbelief here and there, as accidental discoveries help our detective, who of course eventually solves the crime with the police (she's not held up to the reader as superior to the professionals, so it's still somewhat believable at the tale's end. Bacon lends a charming touch to the proceedings, as well.
I really wanted to like this book. J.J. Carrington, the main character, has some wonderful opinions on the human condition, but as she delves into a mystery, her intelligence goes right out the window. The case is an interesting one, but as J.J. continues to investigate on her own, she racks up an impressive number of criminal charges, none of which seem of interest to the police (not surprising, since they appear to be the stereotypical clods of poorly written mysteries). She commits trespass, breaking and entering, withholding information in a police investigation, and tampering with evidence, just to name a few. I'm sure I missed some. And the author has some very "creative" uses for punctuation, which is used incorrectly in most of the book. Her grammar is marginally good, although very basic. But as some other, less critical, reviewers have said, the book is a quick, humorous read.
I definitely agree with my fellow reviewers on that!
