FROM THE AUTHOR OF FIREWORKS,, THE WHY OF THINGS AND DECEMBER
I can't tell you what an absolute pleasure it was (to read your book).. When finally I put the book down, I felt as if I'd been totally transported to another world, and then returned--sort of the way I feel when coming out of the theatre after being immersed in a really good movie.
I was impressed by the book on a number of levels. First of all, your conjuring of place was amazing. I had such a feel for Rose Beach--the cottages and houses, the beach, the bridge. I felt I knew not only the sort of place you were describing, but Rose Beach in particular. And your characters! They were so incredibly well developed and complex. Sometimes when I read a book, I feel as if the characters are two-dimensional cut outs acting out the "story" of the novel, almost as if the author isn't quite sure himself of who they are. Your characters seemed much more real to me, and I had no doubt that you, as author, knew them inside out.
I also particularly admired your deft handling of plot and subplot. There was so much going on in the book! The secrets of the past, the conflicts of the present (between Helen and Zeke, between Zeke and David, between Helen and Hattie), the tragedy of Timmy's death, the difficult fact of Zeke's illness. . . not one of these things overshadowed the others, but all played against each other so well. It was as if you were an expert juggler juggling many balls at a time and never once letting one drop. Oftentimes, I find myself struggling with plot and conflict, and so I particularly admired your ability to manage so many threads and pieces at once without resorting to melodrama, and without anything seeming forced or out of place.
Anyway, I've found myself thinking about your book and characters all day, so I felt I had to write you a note to let you know.

At first I thought the story started rather slow, but then I realized it was just setting the tone. There are so many stories and back stories going on in this one book. Each character was keeping secrets from someone, secrets that could have changed their lives. Some of these have been held for fifty and sixty years, while others for much shorter. I would recommend this story to others, but I would tell them to be patient the story will suck you in and the wait will be worth it.Product details

Family Lies edition by David Slone Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Rose Beach is a good story well told. The setting is imaginable and memorable. The characters are richly portrayed and the plot is interesting enough to keep you turning the pages. I was fascinated by the fact that he tells the story in the voice of a woman. David Slone is a keen observer and I expect we will be treated to many more stories from this first-time novelist.
This book reminds me of a Nickolas Sparks type book. It takes place in the 50-60s in a summer colony. The people are real and I want a sequel!!! The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was because the author wasted too many words and pages on the tennis match....which was great to read but too long.
The tale is about a couple that are in their late 70's and have been married for 60 years. There is a secret that must be divulged and you wonder how it's going to effect several lives.
Very good fast read. Good one to curl up with.
I thought I wouldn't like this book when I discovered that the main characters were in their 80s, but was I wrong. The characters were so real life and as a 60 year old woman, I could appreciate Helen's attitude about sex and other priorities in life.
I predict this will be the first of many must-reads by David Slone.
As an accomplished photographer, David has proven he has the ability to capture those special moments in time one can revisit easily and often by just gazing at his work. The shutter on his camera must shout to him `carpe diem.' And now he is showing us the same talent with his pen.
The reader is left desperately hungry for more. Helen will live forever in your mind and heart. The only quench for the thirst will be Book #2.
Readers of all ages will simply enjoy this story of summer life as the author captures all those 'special moments' worth retelling. I know the setting is a real place, but it's hard to believe the characters are mere compositions of text on a page. Each character in the book is so interesting, and with a deeper story to tell. Perhaps we will learn about them all in the future?
Mr. Slone encore please!
This was a long detailed story of an older couple. It follows them from childhood to old age. The writing is excellent and very clear. There is laughter and tears. Highly recommend.
Rose Beach, a summer home, a place where the magic of warm weather, family, friends and life happens.
This story is a retrospective of lives well lived, heartwarming, heartbreaking and unforgettable.
I loved this book and didn't want it to end.
At first I thought the story started rather slow, but then I realized it was just setting the tone. There are so many stories and back stories going on in this one book. Each character was keeping secrets from someone, secrets that could have changed their lives. Some of these have been held for fifty and sixty years, while others for much shorter.
