Based on an illegally recorded phone conversation made by the author many years ago (turns out it was both a state and a federal crime), Radio Activity is a sordid little tale of life, death, and blackmail set in the world of FM rock radio.
Rick Shannon is an unemployed FM rock DJ considering a mid-life change in careers. But just as he begins selling off his record collection, a job offer comes from a small station in Mississippi, where a DJ recently stopped showing up for work.
After discovering an audio tape that might explain the fate of the missing DJ, Rick decides to look into the matter. Sensing a new career path, he assumes another identity Buddy Miles, PI, naming himself after the one-time drummer for Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys.
The result is a wickedly funny amateur investigation that turns up blackmail, murder, arson, and a major FCC violation. The suspects literally come out of the woods, ranging from a divorce who rents construction equipment to a former local beauty pageant queen (Miss Tire & Auto Parts) to the station's general manager and th president of a local personal finance company (who has peculiar ideas about collateral).
This smart, satiric, southern romp of a novel draws heavily from the author's own experience as a Mississippi-born FM rock radio DJ from the 1970s. An offbeat and hilarious whodunit that redefines the meaning of Classic Rock.
Bill Fitzhugh worked at several FM rock radio stations in the 1970s and 1980s. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, he prefers The Band, Little Feat, and Van Morrision to Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, and Uriah Heep.
For five years Fitzhugh wrote, produced, and hosted "Fitzhugh's All Hand Mixed Vinyl" on Sirius-XM's Deep Tracks channel. In fact, this book is the reason he had the gig. The former program director, the late, great, George Taylor Morris, read Radio Activity and declared it the best book he'd ever read about FM rock radio. One thing led to another and eventually to the show on Deep Tracks. Fitzhugh was one of only three outside show hosts; the other two being Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. The author of nine comic novels, Fitzhugh lives in Los Angeles with his wife and his record collection.

Never read anything by the author before. His hero, a disc jockey, is a well-developed leading man, the other characters are portrayed with broader strokes, as needed to fulfill their roles. To those of us who are not familiar with the music constantly on the mind and lips of the hero and his minions, other disc jockeys on the radio station of which he is program director, most of the dialogue might just as well have been in Swahili. Nevertheless, while not a very mysterious mystery, it is a pleasant read, possibly higher on the pleasure scale for those who are initiates to the tribal language related to the in-music of the past generation.Product details

Radio Activity The Rick Shannon series Book 1 edition by Bill Fitzhugh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What a fun book. I had to admit I didn't know very many of the musicians mentioned in the story but I still gained an appreciation for the people who did know them. The mystery part was great too. Will read again some day.
I liked it.
Who is Tommy Bolin and is "Teaser" any good? That is just one of many questions I'm asking myself after reading Radio Activity. Anyone into classic rock will enjoy the great references, the trivia, the professional selection of music to be played on a classic rock station.
The music and the radio business intrigue is blended with a fine mystery. Bill Fitzhugh has honed his writing skills while maintaining his great sense of humor.
good read; name checks of great music that should be remembered; entertaining...
Loved this book as much as all the other Fitzhugh books. If you are an old rock 'n roll fan, you will especially love this one. Well written, funny, fast paced. Looking forward to reading the 2nd Rick Shannon installment.
Small town radio never looked so dirty. Fitzhugh combines his love of music, personal experiences as DJ, and an eye for detail to create a truly entertaining story. This is a fun read with interesting characters and a great hook.
I was so enthralled by this book, by the author's love of music and the stories that DJ Rick Shannon tells of the artists along the way. This is a book where the journey is so much more than the plot. If you want to see the inside of a rock jock's head, you must read this book! Recommended by a friend who knew I'd love it, and I did. Thank you, Bill Fitzhugh!
